Amanda Anisimova Breaks Into Top 20 in WTA Rankings After Winning Career-Defining Title in Doha

Amanda Anisimova has achieved a remarkable feat by breaking into the Top 20 of the WTA rankings. She has surged from No. 41 to No. 18 following her historic victory at the WTA 1000 event in Doha.

Anisimova’s Rise to the Top: From No. 21 to No. 18

In 2019, at just 18 years old, Anisimova reached a career-high No. 21 in the WTA rankings after a breakthrough season. Her accomplishments included winning her first WTA title in Bogota and reaching her first Grand Slam semifinal at Roland Garros. However, despite these impressive feats, she had yet to crack the Top 20—until now.

Dominating Doha: A Challenging Path to Glory

Anisimova’s triumph in Doha marked her debut in the Top 20 at No. 18. Her victory was no small feat; she defeated a series of top-tier players across six rounds, including current and former Top 20 stars such as Victoria Azarenka, Paula Badosa, Leylah Fernandez, Marta Kostyuk, Ekaterina Alexandrova, and Jelena Ostapenko. Her only setback was a single set loss to Kostyuk in the quarterfinals.

A Remarkable Comeback: Overcoming Personal Challenges

This victory is especially meaningful given the challenges Anisimova has faced in recent years. After an early end to her 2023 season due to personal reasons, she made a stunning comeback in early 2024, starting the year ranked as low as No. 373. Just two weeks later, she fell to No. 442, but despite these setbacks, she has now returned to the top of her game. A year ago, she was ranked No. 213.

Resurgence and Remarkable Growth: Anisimova’s Rapid Climb

Anisimova’s rise has been nothing short of extraordinary. One of her most notable leaps came in August, when she moved from No. 132 to No. 49 after reaching her first WTA 1000 final in Toronto. Now, with her first WTA 1000 title under her belt, she has reached the Top 20, further cementing her return to form.

The Rise of American Women in WTA Rankings

Anisimova’s success adds to the growing presence of American women in the WTA Top 20. With her ascent, there are now six American women in the Top 20, joining Coco Gauff (No. 3), Jessica Pegula (No. 5), Madison Keys (No. 6), Emma Navarro (No. 9), and Danielle Collins (No. 12).

ATP Rankings: Medjedovic and Fonseca Make Major Strides

Meanwhile, in the ATP rankings, rising stars Hamad Medjedovic of Serbia and Joao Fonseca of Brazil have also made impressive moves within the Top 100. Medjedovic climbed from No. 96 to No. 73 after reaching his second ATP final in Marseille, which included a historic Top 10 victory over Daniil Medvedev. Fonseca, on the other hand, surged from No. 99 to a career-high No. 68 after claiming his first ATP title in Buenos Aires, making him the youngest Brazilian to win an ATP title in the Open Era.
